Chanel is a privately owned luxury house producing haute couture, ready-to-wear, handbags, fine jewellery, watches, fragrance, and cosmetics. It is closely associated with the tweed suit, the quilted flap bag, and the N°5 fragrance introduced in 1921. Distribution is tightly controlled through directly operated boutiques and selected department store counters, and the house does not license its ready-to-wear. Founded in 1910 in France.
